The two former Ordnance Buildings built in the 1850's provide an amazing historical backdrop for the ongoing museum exhibits at the park. The Old Ordnance Room, built in 1851, has a yearly curated display focused on military themes. The Powder Magazine, built in 1857, presents the history of Jefferson Barracks from 1826 to present day. As a volunteer you'll greet visitors and provide a general understanding of the building and the current exhibit. Training will be provided by the museum curator as well as shadowing current volunteers from the Friends group who make up the majority of the museum attendants. This is an easy task to master.
Museum docents are organized by the County Parks History staff at Jefferson Barracks. For information on volunteering in the museum contact Kelly Plunkett at 314-615-8884. You can also call Krista Farrow at 314-615-8865 for more information about volunteering at Jefferson Barracks and other St. Louis County Parks. Or visit the St. Louis County Parks Volunteer Page.
All the historic structures in the park are owned by St. Louis County Parks Department which in addition to the Old Ordnance Room and Powder Magazine, include the Laborers House, Ordnance Stable, and the Visitor Center.
Here's your chance to enjoy events year-round at Jefferson Barracks Historic Site by being an Event Volunteer. The Friends of Jefferson Barracks, working with St. Louis County Parks, are always active with assisting at various booths selling food and soda, providing information about an event and other future activities at the park. The Friends occasionally sell t-shirts, hats, books and other park related materials from the Visitor Center gift shop at events too. These activities are part of the fundraising efforts for the organization. Contact us to learn more.
The Gift Shop (while currently closed for renovations) has a selection of books about the history of Jefferson Barracks, the Civil War, and other topics related to the historic site. Among these books are histories written by Marc Kollbaum who studied Jefferson Barracks and its history throughout his tenure as the Historic Site Curator from the 1980s until the 2010s when he retired. He continues to assist Jefferson Barracks as an emeritus advisor. You will also find many unique "Jefferson Barracks" logo items that are exclusive to the gift shop. It includes t-shirts, hoodies and polo shirts for both men and women. Additionally you'll find reproductions of the actual "PT" (physical training) t-shirts worn by troops stationed here during World War II. The original WWII era t-shirts are in the Park Department's Core Collection at Jefferson Barracks.
Contact us if you have interest being a volunteer in the gift shop. We are currently recruiting for positions to help before the grand reopening in June.
Come join us and volunteer alongside Master Gardeners and members of the County Parks Horticulture staff as they tend to the gardens of the Laborer's House, Old Ordnance room, Powder Magazine and at the North Gate entrance. Whether you're a lifelong gardener or just looking for a new experience, members of the Garden Club always have fun getting their hands dirty working alongside fellow volunteers and the park's gardening crew. To quote a volunteer, “I think there’s not any nicer people than gardeners”.
